  1. The range in C Arunachal Pradesh is not backed by actual records but much of the area remains undersurveyed. I would recommend showing the intervening area between W Arunachal and Southern China as uncertain but it will certainly not impact it’s EOO in a big way. However, if you are deriving population estimates as a factor of range size, it would be instructive to see if it still above the 10000 threshold without using this uncertain range.

  2. Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to this discussion. We greatly appreciate the time and effort invested in commenting. The window for consultation is now closed and we are unable to accept any more comments until 22 May 2026. We will now analyse and interpret the information, and we will post a preliminary decision on this species’ Red List category on this page on 22 May 2026, when discussions will re-open.

  3. Preliminary proposal

We thank Praveen J for his helpful comment; the map will be adjusted to show the area intervening as ‘Possibly Extant’. As noted this will scarcely affect the EOO, and the area of suitable habitat would mean the population size is still likely to be >>10,000 mature individuals. Moreover, even if it were to be <10,000 mature individuals, the population structure (assuming a break in the middle) would be such that the size of the largest population would very likely be larger than 1,500 mature individuals; hence the species would still be assessed as Least Concern. Based on available information, our preliminary proposal for the 2026 Red List would be to adopt the proposed classifications outlined in the initial forum discussion.

There is now a period for further comments until the final deadline on 31 May 2026, after which the recommended categorisations will be put forward to IUCN.

The final 2026 Red List categories will be published on the BirdLife and IUCN websites in November 2026, following further checking of information relevant to the assessments by both BirdLife and IUCN.
