  1. Hello we do agree that the species’s status need to be reviewed as the species doesn’t meet the criteria of EN
    However we think that it meets VU criterias B2 b) so we propose the status down listed to VU
    There is no evidence of decline neither no evidence of stability, as no monitoring is implemented
    Regarding the expansion of invasive like Falcata on the islands of distribution, we think the species is threatened by the increase of invasive
    We will begin in 2026 a counting on Bora bora as well as Gould Harrier eradication on this island

  2. I believe the species resist better when the canopy of the forest is high, which is the case in Raiatea but less in the smaller islands, but as Thomas said, no recent census has been performed. Thibaut & Cibois signal a behavioural change for the species, that now is more present close to the ground rather than in the upper canopy – so less exposed to the swamp harrier. This behaviour may facilitate its detection by visitors..;

  3. Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to this discussion. We greatly appreciate the time and effort invested in commenting. The window for consultation is now closed and we are unable to accept any more comments until 22 May 2026. We will now analyse and interpret the information, and we will post a preliminary decision on this species’ Red List category on this page on 22 May 2026, when discussions will re-open.

  4. Preliminary proposal

    Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to this discussion. Based on the information provided, as well as further input via email from T. Ghestemme, J-C. Thibault and A. Cibois, there may be a continuing decline in habitat quality for this species due to the expansion of invasive plant species within its range. Our preliminary proposal for the 2026 Red List would therefore be to list Raiatea Fruit-dove as Near Threatened under Criteria B1b(iii)+2b(iii).

    There is now a period for further comments until the final deadline on 31 May 2026, after which the recommended categorisations will be put forward to IUCN.

    The final 2026 Red List categories will be published on the BirdLife and IUCN websites in November 2026, following further checking of information relevant to the assessments by both BirdLife and IUCN.
