About the Area of Ocupancy, my estimates based on Species Distribution Models and LandCover from MapBiomas Colombia-Ecuador in a 2km x 2km grid, suggests that Near Threathened is correct by B2b(iii) criteria. The more conservative value suggest 2552 km2 remaining, and the least conservative is 8116 km2. Also, my maps also show very little and patchy distribution in Colombia.
Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to this discussion. We greatly appreciate the time and effort invested in commenting. The window for consultation is now closed and we are unable to accept any more comments until 22 May 2026. We will now analyse and interpret the information, and we will post a preliminary decision on this species’ Red List category on this page on 22 May 2026, when discussions will re-open.
We thank Santiago Suárez Morales for their contribution. We note that their reported AOO of 2,552-8,116 km2 is different to the estimate reported in this proposal of 576-3,348 km2. Our minimum AOO was calculated according to a precautionary position that the species plausibly no longer occurs in Colombia. If recent records of this species in Colombia not captured in this assessment are provided, the lower bound AOO could be revised upwards. However, we note that the minimum AOO estimated by Santiago of 2,552 km2 would result in the species being assessed as Least Concern rather than Near Threatened, because it would no longer meet the AOO threshold required for listing under Criterion B2 (AOO < 2,000 km2) or the threshold for Locations (≤ 10).
Similarly, our upper bound AOO is less than the estimate provided by Santiago. We welcome the provision of any details on how this value was calculated using MapBiomas either through this forum or via our redlistteam@birdlife.org inbox.
Based on available information, our preliminary proposal for the 2026 Red List would be to adopt the proposed classifications outlined in the initial forum discussion.
There is now a period for further comments until the final deadline on 31 May 2026, after which the recommended categorisations will be put forward to IUCN.
The final 2026 Red List categories will be published on the BirdLife and IUCN websites in November 2026, following further checking of information relevant to the assessments by both BirdLife and IUCN.
