  1. I agree with the proposal to downlist this species from Endangered to Vulnerable.

I have seen the count data from Guam and it shows a decline in swiftlet numbers between 2020 and 2021, thus it is reasonable to conclude that the decline on this island is continuing. Numbers in 2021 were roughly between 800 and 900 birds. I did extensive surveys of caves on Guam in the 1980s and 1990s and on Aguiguan in the 1990s and 2000s and it is untrue that “many” caves remain to be discovered and surveyed, or that large numbers of swiftlets could exist in currently unknown caves on either island. Perhaps a few caves with colonies could exist on both islands, but that would be all.

Note that the citation for the Rodda and Savidge (2007) is missing from the references.

  3. Preliminary proposal

Based on available information, our preliminary proposal for the 2023 Red List would be to adopt the proposed classifications outlined in the initial forum discussion.

There is now a period for further comments until the final deadline on 12 February 2023, after which the recommended categorisations will be put forward to IUCN.

The final 2023 Red List categories will be published on the BirdLife and IUCN websites in December 2023, following further checking of information relevant to the assessments by both BirdLife and IUCN.
