Woodchat Shrike (Lanius senator): Revise global status?

  1. The dramatic decrease of the nominal population in mainland Italy has started at least in the 1990ies, well before that of the badius subspecies in Sardinia. Transformation of breeding habitat, particularly in Sardinia and Central/Southern Italy, did not take place at a rate compatible with the observed decline. A generalized decrease of insect preys in the breeding areas, and/or factors acting outside Europe (incl. increase of hunting across the Egypt-Libyan fire barrier), seem to be mainly responsible of the observed trends. Vast breeding areas esp. of Sardinia have remained unchanged in the last decades, at least according to the human eye.

  2. Woodchat Shrike is distributed in the southeastern part of Georgia. The extreme northwestern part of its distribution extends to Tbilisi. Exact information on the breeding population is not known. However, based on the personal knowledge of Georgian ornithologists, its status was defined as LC during the update of the Georgian Red List last year.

  3. I have not heard or observed any clue for the decline of the species. I also acknowledge the difficulty to asses the status of a common and widespread species, when standard monitoring data is absent.

  5. Preliminary proposal

Based on available information, our preliminary proposal for the 2022.1 Red List would be to adopt the proposed classifications outlined in the initial forum discussion.

There is now a period for further comments until the final deadline on 27 February 2022, after which the recommended categorisations will be put forward to IUCN.

The final 2022.1 Red List categories will be published on the BirdLife and IUCN websites in July 2022, following further checking of information relevant to the assessments by both BirdLife and IUCN.
