Slender-billed White-eye (Zosterops tenuirostris): Revise global status?

  1. I am supportive of status revision from NT to VU based on the evidence provided. Abundance outside of the National Park appears to be shrinking, and of particular concern is the lack of suitable habitat outside of the NP as well as high nest failure rates within the NP (mostly from Rattus sp). Anecdotal evidence suggests this species is functionally important for seed dispersal of native trees like Ironwood (Nestegis apetala) and Beech (Myrsine ralstoniae) and pollination of Flax (Phormium tenax). Further research into their functional roles within native Norfolk ecosystems is necessary. Further monitoring will also be essential to determine rate of decline and response to management actions.
