  1. I agree species seem rare, this after scientists’ observation having visited in all known eastern rainforest habitat in Madagascar. However, few data are yet available concerning population census (density/per km square) in each site. Moreover, there is no direct study focusing in the species on biology, habitat reduction surface faced into the rainforest degradation rhythm for human slash and burn typical practice in the eastern country side. Therefore we need to conduct typical study for sub population in north, central and southern rainforest belt before suggesting reasonable conservation statute of this species.

The window for consultation is now closed and we are unable to accept any more comments until 21 February 2022. We will now analyse and interpret the new information, and we will post a preliminary decision on this species’s Red List status on this page on 21 February 2022, when discussions will re-open.

  3. Preliminary proposal

Based on available information, our preliminary proposal for the 2022.1 Red List would be to adopt the proposed classifications outlined in the initial forum discussion.

There is now a period for further comments until the final deadline on 27 February 2022, after which the recommended categorisations will be put forward to IUCN.

The final 2022.1 Red List categories will be published on the BirdLife and IUCN websites in July 2022, following further checking of information relevant to the assessments by both BirdLife and IUCN.

  4. I approve of the rigorous application of the criteria. However I do not think that the Global Forest Watch assessment of 40% of habitat lost over the past 15 years is accurate and would be very interested to validate this study. I would estimate that a much more likely scenario is that 10-20% of habitat has been lost over the same period. Suggest in addition that Biological resource use 5.1.1. is a threat that should be mentioned as applying across the whole species range and Causing or likely to cause relatively slow but significant declines (<20% over 10 years or three generations; whichever is the longer).
I suggest that a more appropriate listing would be NT based on these proposals.

  6. Recommended categorisation to be put forward to IUCN

Following further review, the recommended categorisation for this species has been changed, and the range map has been updated. Madagascar Wood-rail is now recommended to be listed as Least Concern.

Many thanks for everyone who contributed to the 2022.1 GTB Forum process. The final 2022.1 Red List categories will be published on the BirdLife and IUCN websites in July 2022, following further checking of information relevant to the assessments by both BirdLife and IUCN.
