Long-billed Black-cockatoo (Zanda baudinii): Revise global status?

  1. I fully endorse the change of status from Endangered to Critically Endangered for the Baudin’s Cockatoo (Calypthorynchus baudinii).

Apart from the rapidly declining population trend, the Baudin’s cockatoo is a forest specialist that has not shown the same adaptation to the agricultural and peri-urban landscape as Carnaby’s cockatoos and Forest Red-tailed Black cockatoos. It is more dependant on the heavily forested areas of the Jarrah Forest Bioregion. Taking into account habitat clearing , wildfires and the slow recruitment rate of hollow bearing trees, this puts them at greater risk than the other two species. Artificial nest hollows have seen succes with Carnaby’s cockatoos but not with Baudin’s cockatoos.
In addition, they frequently travel in large flocks with Carnaby’s cockatoos and it is highly likely that because of this, their numbers have been overestimated in previous counts and are likely lower than stated above.

In short, there is no doubt that this species is the most threatened of the three black cocakatoo species in WA and the most vulnerable in regard to a rapidly changing climate and environment. It is therefore, in light of all information stated above, not overly cautious to change it’s status to CE but perhaps overdue.
