Based on available information, our preliminary proposal for the 2022.1 Red List would be to adopt the proposed classifications outlined in the initial forum discussion.
There is now a period for further comments until the final deadline on 27 February 2022, after which the recommended categorisations will be put forward to IUCN.
The final 2022.1 Red List categories will be published on the BirdLife and IUCN websites in July 2022, following further checking of information relevant to the assessments by both BirdLife and IUCN.
There is no overall population estimate, and the species is affected by hunting, but remains common or even abundant in some well-protected areas and present in many others. I would therefore recommend that this species not be included as NT.
Worth noting that the principal threats (apart from hunting) are perennial and annual non-timber crops (which leads to total loss of habitat) and charcoal production, not logging and wood harvesting, unless charcoal production is included in logging and wood harvesting. Both should be considered as applying over the whole species’ range and Causing or likely to cause relatively slow but significant declines (<20% over 10 years or three generations; whichever is the longer)

Following further review, the recommended categorisation for this species has been changed. Crested Coua is now recommended to be listed as Least Concern.
