  1. The window for consultation is now closed and we are unable to accept any more comments until 21 February 2022. We will now analyse and interpret the new information, and we will post a preliminary decision on this species’s Red List status on this page on 21 February 2022, when discussions will re-open.

  2. Preliminary proposal

Based on available information, our preliminary proposal for the 2022.1 Red List would be to adopt the proposed classifications outlined in the initial forum discussion.

There is now a period for further comments until the final deadline on 27 February 2022, after which the recommended categorisations will be put forward to IUCN.

The final 2022.1 Red List categories will be published on the BirdLife and IUCN websites in July 2022, following further checking of information relevant to the assessments by both BirdLife and IUCN.

  3. The following comment was received from Glyn Young while the window for consultation was temporarily closed:

“Yihenew A. Birhanu, heading up the TWSG project Population status, threats and conservation of the blue-winged goose in Ethiopia has commented to TWSG:

There is no greater news than seeing and hearing about improvements in the conservation status of any threatened species and ecosystem, which is the aspiration of every conservationist. However, I consider it too early to accept the newly proposed downlisting in conservation status category of the Blue-winged Goose, Cyanochen cyanoptera, for two main reasons:

    A. Besides the fact that little is known about the ecology, population status and behaviour of the species, it isn’t really feasible to revise its conservation status with no sound evidence (no single published research output, yet – which is a shame!) – it would be better to strengthen the research and conservation effort to produce more detailed information about the species and then consider status changes

    B. A downlisting now, with little evidence, might prove challenging to the research effort and conservation attention of the species through limiting the focus and possible engagement of organizations and funders.

Note that my (Yihenew’s) team would love to share opinions and outputs about the conservation challenges regarding the threats to the species and their habitats with any experts in this regard here or on other discussion platforms as well.”

  4. Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to this discussion. We greatly appreciate the time and effort invested by so many people in commenting. The window for consultation is now closed and we are unable to accept any more comments. We will analyse and interpret the new information, and we will post a final decision on this species’ Red List status on this page on 7 March 2022.

  5. Recommended categorisations to be put forward to IUCN

The final categorisation for this species has not changed. Blue-winged Goose is recommended to be listed as Near Threatened, approaching the threshold for listing as threatened under Criterion C2a(ii).

Many thanks for everyone who contributed to the 2022.1 GTB Forum process. The final 2022.1 Red List categories will be published on the BirdLife and IUCN websites in July 2022, following further checking of information relevant to the assessments by both BirdLife and IUCN.
