We’ve been conducting monitoring of the black shama in Cebu before the pandemic. We estimate the population using distnavce sampling up to 11k. We hope that we can continue the Siloy Watch (Black Shama Watch) this year to get more clearer population estimates. We recommend that the species could be under category Vulnerable since not all the forest left in Cebu are protected areas mostly under the management of our local government units. Forest patches are still vulnerable to illegal activities like cutting of trees and encroachment.
Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to this discussion. We greatly appreciate the time and effort invested in commenting. The window for consultation is now temporarily closed and we are unable to accept any more comments until 6 February 2023. We will now analyse and interpret new information, and we will post a preliminary decision on this species’ Red List status on this page on 6 February 2023, when discussions will re-open.
Based on available information, our preliminary proposal for the 2023 Red List would be to adopt the proposed classifications outlined in the initial forum discussion. Listing of the change as ‘Genuine’ is a mistake on the Forum topic and has been amended. Suggestion that the species be listed as Vulnerable (G. Jakosalem in litt.) is noted, however no justification is given for the Criteria thresholds the species is meeting to warrant this. Although the vulnerability of forest is acknowledged, although there is no indication that this is an active threat impacting the species’ overall population.
There is now a period for further comments until the final deadline on 12 February 2023, after which the recommended categorisations will be put forward to IUCN.
The final 2023 Red List categories will be published on the BirdLife and IUCN websites in December 2023, following further checking of information relevant to the assessments by both BirdLife and IUCN.

Recommended categorisation to be put forward to IUCN
The final categorisation for this species has not changed. Black Shama is recommended to be listed as Least Concern.

At present (11 Jan) it says ‘genuine’ type of change but this seems a slip for ‘non-genuine’ given the rationale given
