Grey-banded Mannikin (Lonchura vana): Revise global status?

  1. Although the restricted small range, the species is very common around Anggi lakes. It is spreading wilder and further from the lake. The species has been encountered in new sites about 8 to 10 kilometers from the usually sites where it has been found for many years thus giving suggestions of the successful breeding and increase of the population in its range.

  2. I have records of encounters with 3 individuals of the species in Kebar Valley, West Papua in August 2018. This can confirm previous record (Beehler & Pratt, 2016).

  3. I agree with the comments made by Mehd, the grasslands in the areas are not threatened and deforestation may actually be increasing the species range. Least concern is appropriate.

  4. Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to this discussion. We greatly appreciate the time and effort invested in commenting. The window for consultation is now closed and we are unable to accept any more comments until 18 July 2022. We will now analyse and interpret the new information, and we will post a preliminary decision on this species’ Red List status on this page on 18 July 2022, when discussions will re-open.

  5. Preliminary proposal

Based on available information, our preliminary proposal for the 2022.2 Red List would be to adopt the proposed classifications outlined in the initial forum discussion.

Following confirmation (F. Hasudungan in litt. 2022) that the species does occur in the Kabar Valley, the EOO has increased to 4,380 km2 and the species is now suspected to occur as two subpopulations, although this range may yet prove contiguous.

There is now a period for further comments until the final deadline on 24 July 2022, after which the recommended categorisations will be put forward to IUCN. The final 2022.2 Red List categories will be published on the BirdLife and IUCN websites in December 2022, following further checking of information relevant to the assessments by both BirdLife and IUCN.

  7. Recommended categorisation to be put forward to IUCN

The final categorisation for this species has not changed. Grey-banded Mannikin is recommended to be listed as Least Concern.
