  1. Updates needed
re: population loss, environmental/ecological impact of recent and damaging massive fires needed.

re: Covid-related impact on population assessment and trafficking

  2. The range polygon for this species on which the calculations are based is too small and the species does not have a disjunct distribution – the species occurs east to the Xingu drainage in E Mato Grosso and is distributed continuously across the state west as far as the Rio Madeira. I’m not sure how this may affect the modelling result as far as categorisation but the result will certainly be different.

  3. Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to this discussion. We greatly appreciate the time and effort invested by so many people in commenting. The window for consultation is now closed and we are unable to accept any more comments until 21 February 2022. We will now analyse and interpret the new information, and we will post a preliminary decision on this species’s Red List status on this page on 21 February 2022, when discussions will re-open.

  4. Preliminary proposal

Following comments on the species’s current distribution, the range map has been revised as shown above. The EOO has been recalculated as 915,000 km2 and the rate of tree cover loss within the newly mapped range is calculated at 9% over the past three generations, increasing to 11% over three generations from 2016 on. The assessment of Madeira Parakeet against Criteria A and B remains unaffected by the map edit.

Based on available information, our preliminary proposal for the 2022.1 Red List would be to adopt the proposed classifications outlined in the initial forum discussion.

There is now a period for further comments until the final deadline on 27 February 2022, after which the recommended categorisations will be put forward to IUCN.

The final 2022.1 Red List categories will be published on the BirdLife and IUCN websites in July 2022, following further checking of information relevant to the assessments by both BirdLife and IUCN.

  6. Recommended categorisation to be put forward to IUCN

The final categorisation for this species has not changed, but the account and distribution range map for this species have been updated to incorporate additional information from this discussion. Madeira Parakeet is recommended to be listed as Least Concern.
