  1. This species seems to be rarer and/or more sensitive to forest loss and fragmentation than H. whittakeri. During our 2010-2011 field campaign in the muncipality of Paragominas we only recorded this species twice in a sample of 97 primary forest sites – one logged and burned site and one undisturbed site (Moura et al. 2012) and no records from 25 variably-aged secondary forest sites. We did not record the species at all in our inventory of Moju/Tailanda (Lees et al. 2015) and never from any sites in the whole Belem Area of endemism in 5 years of exploring there outside the main contiguous forest blocks around the municipality of Paragominas – see representative records on eBird. The species formerly occurred around Belem but is now extinct there (Moura et al. 2014) despite extensive searching.

  3. Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to this discussion. We greatly appreciate the time and effort invested in commenting. The window for consultation is now closed and we are unable to accept any more comments until 2 February 2026. We will now analyse and interpret the information, and we will post a preliminary decision on this species’ Red List category on this page on 2 February 2026, when discussions will re-open.

  4. Preliminary proposal

We thank all contributors for their comments. All relevant information will be incorporated into the updated Red List assessment for this species. Based on available information, our preliminary proposal for the 2026 Red List would be to adopt the proposed classification outlined in the initial forum discussion.

There is now a period for further comments until the final deadline on 8 February 2026, after which the recommended categorisations will be put forward to IUCN.

The final 2026 Red List categories will be published on the BirdLife and IUCN websites later this year, following further checking of information relevant to the assessments by both BirdLife and IUCN.

  6. Recommended categorisation to be put forward to IUCN

The final categorisation for this species has not changed. Snethlage’s Antpitta is recommended to be listed as Vulnerable under Criteria A2c+4c.

Many thanks to everyone who contributed to the 2026.1 GTB Forum process. The final Red List categories will be published on the BirdLife and IUCN websites later this year, following further checking of information relevant to the assessments by both BirdLife and IUCN.
