No Brasil, a última avaliação de risco de extinção da espécie foi realizada em 2019 e categorizada como Criticamente em Perigo (CR), Possivelmente Extinta (PEX), pelo critério D.
Justificativa
Myrmotherula fluminensis é endêmica do estado do Rio de Janeiro. O único registro conhecido (exemplartipo) é proveniente das proximidades do sopé da Serra dos Órgãos, em área altamente pressionada devido à construção do Complexo Petroquímico do Rio de Janeiro. Pesquisas falharam em detectar a espécie e caso ainda exista uma população, esta certamente será muito pequena, com menos de 50 indivíduos maduros. Dessa forma, M. fluminensis foi categorizada como Criticamente em Perigo (CR), Possivelmente Extinta (PEX), pelo critério D.

É endêmica do Brasil, registrada apenas no estado do Rio de Janeiro (Zimmer & Isler, 2003). O único registro conhecido (exemplar-tipo) foi coletado nas proximidades do sopé da Serra dos Órgãos, em 1982, e depositado no Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi. Pouco se conhece sobre a biologia da espécie. O único indivíduo coletado estava em uma área parcialmente isolada e altamente perturbada, a cerca de 20 m de altura (Zimmer & Isler, 2003).
Pesquisas foram realizadas na localidade-tipo de M. fluminensis, entretanto falharam em localizá-la (V. Piacentini, com. pess., 2019). Dessa forma, dado o limitado avistamento da espécie, sendo o exemplar-tipo a única evidência de sua existência, e a infrutífera busca ao longo de anos (Zimmer & Isler, 2003; Pimentel & Olmos, 2011; Lees & Pimm, 2015; V. Piacentini, com. pess., 2019), é seguro estimar que, caso ainda exista uma população, esta certamente será muito pequena, com menos de 50 indivíduos maduros.
O pouco conhecimento sobre a espécie dificulta a compreensão das ameaças que a afetam, mas considerando que tenha hábitos florestais, a perda de habitat devido ao desmatamento seria uma ameaça (Zimmer & Isler, 2003). A região da localidade-tipo é altamente pressionada pela construção do Complexo Petroquímico do Rio de Janeiro.
This category seems appropriate. Given the occurrence of various searches for the species, so far without success, it would be worthwhile to consider placing this Brazilian endemic in the CR (PE) category, in alignment with the national red list.
