My 2013 fieldwork in Java (Iqbal et al. 2013) and a follow-up opportunity in Belitung Island (Sumatra) in 2014-2015 sadly suggest this species is likely Extinct. Java’s lowland wetlands, where hunters are prevalent, have largely vanished, leaving no suitable habitat or chance to survive.
According to my observation since 2015 at Java’s lowland wetland which is Wonorejo, Ujung Pangkah, Bentar (East Java), Progo Estuary, Selokan Mataran (Yogyakarta), Muara Cimanuk, Karangsong, Waruduwur, Ambulu, Pantai Cantigi, Sungai Cangking, Sukrawetan, Bojong Raong, Tanjung Pakis, Muara Gembong, Rawa Segaran, Situ Cibereum (West Java), Tanjung Pasir, Pulau Dua, Sawarna, Rawa Danau (Banten). No sight of Javan Lapwing. All my observation have been recorded to ebird and burungnesia.
