  1. The assessment above reflects exchanges between the Red List team and staff of the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation (Rodrigues/Mauritius). MWF is in process of conducting an island wide Rodrigues Warbler survey (in collaboration with University of Chester, UK), which would have helped provide more accurate data for the above assessment but understand that the assessment cannot wait for the survey. Nevertheless, the trends and order of magnitude in population and distribution appear to be correct, and we support the downlisting to Least Concern. We also feel that decades of habitat restoration and re-creation on Rodrigues, both using native and introduced species, as well as secondary vegetation, have created habitat for the birds that have supported the increase in distribution and population size. There has also been a favourable policy climate for environmental protection and conservation that is reassuring.

The window for consultation is now closed and we are unable to accept any more comments until 25 April 2025. We will now analyse and interpret the information, and we will post a preliminary decision on this species’ Red List category on this page on 25 April 2025, when discussions will re-open.

  3. Preliminary proposal

We thank V. Tatayah for their comment, and MWF for their previous input for this species’ assessment. It is indeed unfortunate that the assessment could not be delayed to incorporate new data to be produced this year, although this will certainly be used for the species’ next reassessment. Based on available information, our preliminary proposal for the 2025 Red List would be to adopt the proposed classification outlined in the initial forum discussion.

There is now a period for further comments until the final deadline on 4 May 2025, after which the recommended categorisations will be put forward to IUCN.

The final 2025 Red List categories will be published on the BirdLife and IUCN websites in October 2025, following further checking of information relevant to the assessments by both BirdLife and IUCN.
