Fully agree with this assessment. This species almost certainly isnt uncommon or range-restricted. Its just incredibly cryptic! Hence old estimates of its range were artifacts of its poor detectability. It has now been recorded as various locations throughout the updated mapped area provided in this account. While forest-dependent, there isnt any reason to believe it doesnt occur widely across Sulawesi (in suitable habitat). LC would seem the sensible designation for this species (putting it in-line with other wide-spread, forest-dependent Sulawesi endemics).
We agree with the assessment for Blue-faced rail, our observation in Peleng island from 2020 – 2024 shows the species really is cryptic. in Peleng it was observed from several habitat type such as sago swamp near coastal village, secondary forest, degraded secondary forest, and agroforestry in western part (kokolomboi and okulo potil), central (patukuki), and eastern part (Nulion)
Forest in Peleng is lost principally to slash and burn agriculture mainly for Yams, Peanut and Maize.
Burung Indonesia are currently working on Peleng with the aim of reducing habitat loss and degradation by implementing awareness and education and mainstreaming endemic biodiversity protections into local government policy and programmes
Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to this discussion. We greatly appreciate the time and effort invested in commenting. The window for consultation is now closed and we are unable to accept any more comments until 25 April 2025. We will now analyse and interpret the information, and we will post a preliminary decision on this species’ Red List category on this page on 25 April 2025, when discussions will re-open.
We thank contributors for the information shared in the above comments. This will be incorporated into the updated species factsheet. Based on available information, our preliminary proposal for the 2025 Red List would be to adopt the proposed classification outlined in the initial forum discussion.
There is now a period for further comments until the final deadline on 4 May 2025, after which the recommended categorisations will be put forward to IUCN.
The final 2025 Red List categories will be published on the BirdLife and IUCN websites in October 2025, following further checking of information relevant to the assessments by both BirdLife and IUCN.
