  1. In November 2022 Prigen Conservation Breeding Ark carried out a release of 40 captive-bred Javan Pied Starlings within the grounds of Taman Safari Prigen, in an attempt to establish a free-living population within the security of the zoo site. Recent updates from PCBA curator Jochen Menner indicate these birds are thriving and breeding.
May this or other proposed conservation translocation released populations affect the proposed new category of Critically Endangered ( possibly extinct in the wild)?

  2. Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to this discussion. We greatly appreciate the time and effort invested in commenting. The window for consultation is now closed and we are unable to accept any more comments until 28 October 2024. We will now analyse and interpret the information, and we will post a preliminary decision on this species’ Red List status on this page on 28 October 2024, when discussions will re-open.

  3. Preliminary proposal

We thank A. Owen for his comment. We are aware of the introduction of captive-bred birds at Prigen, and details of this have been incorporated in the assessment. Given the recency of the introduction, it seems prudent to wait until the population has proven itself self-sustaining for a number of years/generations.

Based on available information, our preliminary proposal for the 2025 Red List would be to adopt the proposed classifications outlined in the initial forum discussion.

There is now a period for further comments until the final deadline on 10 November 2024, after which the recommended categorisations will be put forward to IUCN.

The final Red List categories will be published on the BirdLife and IUCN websites in 2025, following further checking of information relevant to the assessments by both BirdLife and IUCN.

  5. Recommended categorisation to be put forward to IUCN

The final categorisation for this species has not changed. Javan Pied Starling is recommended to be listed as Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct in the Wild).
