In Chile, the Peruvian Thick-knee is restricted to a limited set of valleys in the north of the country. In 2022 it was classified by the Chilean Ministry of the Environment as “Vulnerable”, due to an estimated national population of no more than 300 individuals and an observed decline in habitat quality due to urbanization and agriculture. The areas in which the Peruvian Thick-knee is found in Chile correspond to heavily degraded valleys, due to the replacement of xerophytic scrubland by agricultural plantations (with a significant part of them carried out through greenhouses), in addition to the use of high amounts of pesticides.

Based on available information, our preliminary proposal for the 2024 Red List would be to adopt the proposed classifications outlined in the initial forum discussion.
There is now a period for further comments until the final deadline on 13 May 2024, after which the recommended categorisations will be put forward to IUCN.
The final 2024 Red List categories will be published on the BirdLife and IUCN websites in October 2024, following further checking of information relevant to the assessments by both BirdLife and IUCN.
