  1. Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to this discussion. We greatly appreciate the time and effort invested in commenting. The window for consultation is now closed and we are unable to accept any more comments until 3 May 2024. We will now analyse and interpret all information, and we will post a preliminary decision on this species’ Red List status on this page on 3 May 2024, when discussions will re-open.

  2. Preliminary proposal

Based on available information, our preliminary proposal for the 2024 Red List would be to adopt the proposed classifications outlined in the initial forum discussion.

There is now a period for further comments until the final deadline on 13 May 2024, after which the recommended categorisations will be put forward to IUCN.

The final 2024 Red List categories will be published on the BirdLife and IUCN websites in October 2024, following further checking of information relevant to the assessments by both BirdLife and IUCN.

  3. To ensure recent information is complete, I would suggest you contact Mehd Halouate (birdingindonesia1@gmail.com) who saw this species in the wild approximately ten years ago, notably at low elevation.

Two things are concerning about the assessment above:

    1. Given that we know Buru was a prison island AND that the prisoners supplemented their meager diets by trapping and selling birds AND we know Indonesian bird trappers are indiscriminate when it comes to just about anything that flies, it would behoove the IUCN to take a conservative approach when guessing about the status of this species. Any bird that has been seen reliably by living, knowledgeable individuals you can count on one hand is a species that should be considered of greater concern than “Data Deficient” by any measure.

    2. This genus has a known and unfortunate habit of becoming incredibly rare and possibly extinct time and time again. Until we know more about the status of the remaining population on Buru, assigning this species the greatest degree of attention from the RedList would seem the prudent approach to anyone who cares about keeping it from going extinct.

  4. Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to this discussion. We greatly appreciate the time and effort invested in commenting. The window for consultation is now closed and we are unable to accept any more comments. We will analyse and interpret available information, posting a final decision on this species’ Red List status on this page on 20 May 2024.

  5. Recommended categorisation to be put forward to IUCN

The final categorisation for this species has not changed. Blue-fronted Lorikeet is recommended to be listed as Data Deficient.

Many thanks for everyone who contributed to the 2024.2 GTB Forum process. The final 2024 Red List categories will be published on the BirdLife and IUCN websites in October 2024, following further checking of information relevant to the assessments by both BirdLife and IUCN.
