  1. Some modelling of the availability of ‘campo limpo’ cerrado formations would inform likely trends in this species. It is still restricted to these open humid grassy habitats which are the first to go under the plough.

  2. Like C.caudacuta, E.ruformarginatus is associated with specific environments in the Cerrado biome. In the state of Bahia, the locations where it occurs have been severely degraded by large agribusiness companies (Barreiras, São Desidério, Cocos, Luis Eduardo Magalhães), and it is currently only seen in patches in a landscape of native vegetation amidst a very altered surrounding landscape. Minimally, I consider the species to be near threatened.

  3. Least Concern seems appropriate. This was also the conclusion of the last Brazilian national assessment, carried out in 2019 (not yet published).
There is no information about the population or its trend. There is habitat loss due to the expansion of monocultures and livestock but its distribution is very wide and it does not appear that current threats could bring it to the thresholds of extinction risk in the near future.

  4. Update: The national assessment of this species was carried out in 2018 and has already been published in:

Marini, M.A.; Lima, D.M.; Carvalho, C.B.; Ubaid, F.K.; Silva, G.B.M.; Abreu, T.L.S.; Oliveira, T.D.; Alves, W.N.; Dias, F.F.; Alquezar, R.D. 2023. Euscarthmus rufomarginatus (Pelzeln, 1868). Sistema de Avaliação do Risco de Extinção da Biodiversidade – SALVE.
    Available in: https://salve.icmbio.gov.br DOI: 10.37002/salve.ficha.22530 – Accessed: 02 de fev. de 2024.

  5. In Paraguay the species is only known from a specimen collected in 1940, and was considered Data Deficient at the national level in the most recent assessment (2017). Cerrado habitats are rapidly disappearing in the country, most recently with the expansion of extensive Eucalyptus plantations into this ecoregion.
