Buckingham, Dutson and Newman (undated /1990) recorded 15 contacts per km2 in old-growth lowland forest, 7.9 in old-growth hill forest, 0 in old-growth montane forest, 4.0 in coconuts and secondary forest. My subsequent observations suggest that it is easier to see and perhaps more common in mosaics of forest and ‘gardens’. Its AOO is about 3100 km2 but there are no data showing how much of this is degraded. Assuming a mean contact rate of about 8 contacts per km2 across the AOO, and each contact might represent three largely silent individuals, the population might be around 70,000 individuals and certainly >>10,000 individuals

Based on available information, our preliminary proposal for the 2023 Red List would be to adopt the proposed classifications outlined in the initial forum discussion.
There is now a period for further comments until the final deadline on 2 July 2023, after which the recommended categorisations will be put forward to IUCN.
The final 2023 Red List categories will be published on the BirdLife and IUCN websites in December 2023, following further checking of information relevant to the assessments by both BirdLife and IUCN.
