In Colombia, this species is estimated to have lost ~5% of its habitat during the last 10 years and its AOO is estimated at 2718 km2. Deforestation continues throughout its range and it is possible that habitat loss rates are relatively similar within its range in Venezuela. It is possible that the entire AOO (Colombia – Venezuela) approaches the VU threshold, but no such information exists. The species should still be categorized as NT nationally (Colombia).
Although a bit hesitant about this change, downlisting the species to LC seems to be supported by available data.
I am OK with this change. This species can be common in the right habitat and survives in smaller patches. That said, its range is far patchier and less contiguous than shown in the maps. It seems to have a fairly tight elevational range and habitat preference to forests in the 1500-2000 m range, which have been heavily deforested in Colombia but are more extant in Venezuela. Some subspecies in this group may be NT or even VU but as a whole it’s probably LC. I agree it may be NT in Colombia for that reason.

Based on available information, our preliminary proposal for the 2023 Red List would be to adopt the proposed classifications outlined in the initial forum discussion. The species’ factsheet has been updated to reflect information submitted on this forum.
There is now a period for further comments until the final deadline on 12 February 2023, after which the recommended categorisations will be put forward to IUCN.
The final 2023 Red List categories will be published on the BirdLife and IUCN websites in December 2023, following further checking of information relevant to the assessments by both BirdLife and IUCN.
